Prof. Sofia Consuegra
Professor in Biosciences | Swansea University
I obtained a BSc in Biology (First class) from the University of Oviedo, then worked for a number of years as an External Scientific Advisor in salmon genetics for the government in Spain before obtaining a PhD in Conservation Genetics from the University of Cantabria.
After postdocs at the Zoological Society of London, the University of St. Andrews and a maternity break, I was appointed Lecturer in Aquatic Biology at Aberystwyth University.

Prof. Carlos Garcia de Leaniz
Professor in Biosciences, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Research | Swansea University
I began my career in Biology at Universidad de Navarra (Pamplona,), then moved to CEU (Madrid) and University of Victoria (BC, Canada), where I got my BSc. This was followed by a Doctorate at the University of Aberdeen.
I did a post-doc at the University of Glasgow then returned to Spain to coordinate the Atlantic Salmon Restoration Programme in Galicia and then in Cantabria (Centro Ictiologico de Arredondo).
Research interests
Microbiome
Epigenetics & transcriptomics
Environmental stressors
Dr Tamsyn Uren Webster
Postdoctoral Researcher |SMARTAQUA project | Swansea University
I have a PhD in molecular ecotoxicology from the University of Exeter (2014). I used transcriptomics (RNA-seq), together with physiological and reproductive endpoints, to establish mechanisms of chemical toxicity and tolerance in laboratory and wild fish populations.
I study the impact of environmental stressors on animal and ecosystem health, including both adverse effects and capacity for tolerance, using omics tools integrated with wider health measures.
Research interests
Remote sensing
GIS
Environmental pressures
Dr. Josh Jones
Postdoctoral Researcher |AMBER project | Swansea University
I have a PhD in geography from Aberystwyth University and a background in remote sensing, GIS and process based modelling.
After completing my PhD I have worked on conservation projects using my skills in remote sensing, GIS and habitat suitability modelling in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
Research interests
River restoration
Fish ecology
Dr Pete Jones
Postdoctoral Researcher |AMBER project | Swansea University
I have a PhD in fish ecology from the University of Otago (New Zealand).
I have extensive field and laboratory experience, and have spent several years working in aquatic research, freshwater consultancy, and river restoration.
Research interests
Community ecology
Macroevolution
Environmental genomics
Dr Richard O'Rorke
Postdoctoral Researcher |AMBER project | Swansea University
PhD (Marine Science) University of Auckland, New Zealand; BA (Philosophy) Victoria University, New Zealand
I study community ecology and macroevolution across diverse habitats ranging from rain-fed lakes to oceans to mountain ranges using many techniques (molecular, microscopy, behavioural, culture).
Research interests
Nutrigenomics and Immunology
Phylogenetics and Biogeography
Aquaculture and Ornamentals
Dr Moritz Pohl
Postdoctoral Researcher |SmartAqua project | Swansea University
I obtained a PhD in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen addressing immunological and nutritional research in salmonid aquaculture.
Applied molecular biology methodologies to investigate genomic, transcriptomic and proteomic phenotypes in various fish species.
Research interests
Teaching
Sustainable seafood systems
Management & Communication
Dr Sara Barrento
Science communication and stakeholder manager | Swansea University
I obtained a BSc in Marine Biology (First class) from the University of the Algarve (Portugal), then obtaining a PhD in Animal Science from the University of Porto (Portugal).
In the past 12 years, I researched sustainable aquaculture of mussels and seaweeds; supported the delivery and management of eight large European Research projects (FP6, FP7, Horizon2020, ERDF, INTERREG) and RC-UK projects; lectured in the UK, Thailand and Gibraltar.
